iWalk – International Walk to School in the USA Day

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Join children and adults around the world t celebrate the benefits of walking.

Why walk?

International Walk to School is an annual event that promotes walling for several reasons:

Physical Activity / teaching safe walking skills to children / awareness of how walkable a community is and where improvements can be made / concern for the environment / reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools / taking back neighborhoods for people on foot / sharing time with community leaders, parents, and children

PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS

Here is some important information that every student (and their parents) need to know!

DRESS REQUIRMENTS

Clean and proper gym shoes must be worn in class.  They must have either shoelaces that are securely tied, “Velcro,” or no-lace shoes which are designed for activity.  Shoes should fit the feet snugly for safety and to allow for maximum participation.  Any kind of sandals, dress shoes, boots, Crocs, or casual shoes with regular or platform heels are not appropriate and are not allowed for class participation.  Shoes that have “cut out” spaces are also not allowed in class (including sport sandals).  These rules are to insure the safe participation of your child with the most amount of activity.  If you have any questions about whether shoes are acceptable for class, please have your child show them to his/her p.e. teacher before they wear them to class!

Students also need to dress for maximum participation.  Shorts or long pants must be worn underneath skirts/dresses.  Pants must fit at the natural waistline – a belt needs to be worn if pants or shorts are too baggy.

The following school dress code rules also apply for physical education:

*Tank tops must have straps that are at least 3 fingers wide and long enough to cover the midriff – especially during movement.

*Tops cannot be cut low in the front and/or the back.

*Shorts and skirts must be longer than the mid-thigh.

*No bare midriffs.

Anyone not wearing appropriate clothing will not be allowed to participate in class.  Every day they miss due to not being properly dressed, there will be a consequence given.

Hair must be kept off the face during class time.  Anyone with longer hair may be required to pull it off their face or secure it with a hair band.  Hair falling into the eyes is not safe for participation.

Please be aware of when your student is scheduled for physical education class.  It is always hard for a student to not be able to participate because they are not prepared for safe activity.

Thank you very much.  Please email me at jhancock@op97.org, should you have any questions.

LETTER

4th & 5th Grade Physical Activity Note from Mr. Hancock

4th and 5th grade parents,

I will be sending home monthly homework assignments to all 4th and 5th graders thoughout the year.  This assignment is used to promote physical activity outside of school.  Since I only get to see them once a week for a hour (66 mins.), I wanted to make sure that they still remain active the rest of the week or at least twice a month.  It only requires your child to perform two different physical activities each being at least a half an hour in duration.  A total of one hour a month.  I asked that they get a parents signature on it to verify that they performed these activities.  If your child already plays a sport that would already take care of the assignment.  At first it was just extra credit, but since the return rate was so low I made it mandatory homework and part of their grade.  This homework is 10% of each unit’s (month’s) grade and could lower your child’s grade if not turned in.  Please just be aware that this is coming home and it is required homework that was put in place to keep your sons and daughters active and healthy.

Thanks again,

Mr. Hancock

Letter from Mr. Hodge

September 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We have a number of students this year with severe, life threatening allergies to peanuts, all other tree nuts, as well as their products and oils. Strict avoidance is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction. For this reason we must be cautious with all classroom snacks eaten in the classroom and party foods distributed in the classroom during schoolwide celebrations. There will be a NO NUT POLICY for the following classrooms:

  • Kindergarten- Ms. Ricchio, Mrs. Gullo,  Ms. Weigel  and Ms. Arroyo
  • First- Mrs. Pelling, Mr. Degman, Ms. Kekatos and Mrs. Solomon
  • Second-Mrs. Ahearn and  Mrs. Klette
  • Third-Mr. Gray, Mr. Sak and Mrs. Kaunelis
  • Fourth-Mrs. Payton
  • Fifth-Mr. Eng and Ms. Balicki
  • Special Education-Ms. Saliny

In addition, we will be implementing the following food policy concerning schoolwide celebration foods:

  1. All food served to the students must be purchased in a store. No bakery or homemade goods may be brought into the classroom.
  2. The teacher must be given prior notice about any food items being brought into the classroom.
  3. All items must be sent in its original packaging with the listing of ingredients. If the list is omitted the food will not be distributed.
  4. Labels can be read in several ways:

  • Nuts are listed as ingredient
  • The label has a “may contain nuts’ warning
  • A warning that the food may have been processed in a facility that contains nuts

Please be advised that our lunchroom is not a Nut Free Zone and that we offer a Nut Free Table for children with nut specific allergies. Friends of children with nut allergies may sit at the Nut Free table if they eat a hot lunch provided by the school lunch program.Parents who send a lunch from home for their child are free to pack the foods of their choice. It is our hope that families CHOOSE to not send foods containing peanut butter or nuts.

We expect to have a wonderful year at Irving with these few accommodations. Since it is easy to forget these concerns if you do not live with them daily, we will send periodic reminders. We appreciate your support and understanding.

Sincerely,

John Hodge
