Health and Wellness Committee (HAWC) for students in 4th and 5th grade

Irving has a newly formed Health and Wellness Committee (HAWC) for students in 4th and 5th grade.  Each month they will be looking at one aspect of leading a healthy life and will share what they’ve learned with the rest of the school.  The first topic is sleep.  Look for fun facts about sleep and how important it is to a healthy life.

We also had two “tastings” in October and November.  The students tried butternut squash without knowing what it was and tried to guess what vegetable they were tasting.  Most of them thought it was sweet potato!  Try this at home.  Cube the squash, drizzle a little olive oil and a little salt and then bake for about 45 minutes.  Healthy and easy!  The second tasting was quinoa, a grain, cooked in vegetable broth.  Again many of them liked this and it is easy to prepare.
