November 1: Shop at Whole Foods for the Schoolyard!

Scavenger Hunt at Whole Foods – THURSDAY NOVEMBER 1 ONLY!
On Thursday, November 1 Whole Foods is donating 5% of sales to the Irving Schoolyard Project. To support this effort over 30 teachers and staff from all District 97 schools volunteered to have their pictures placed in Whole Foods near their favorite food. You can find them! Go on a scavenger hunt to find them while also shopping to help the ISP! Get the full list of teachers when you come in the door, write down their favorite food when you find their picture, and enter the raffle to win a gift card from Whole Foods Market!

Please consider stocking your fridge with meat, taking your family over for dinner, or buying wine and beer for the holidays. It’s the day after Halloween, so think healthy snacks for your children after all that candy. If time is an issue, please consider using their personal shopper (fee waived this day). All you do is place an order at least 48 hours in advance by emailing mw.rvf.marketing@wholefoods.com or calling 708.366.1045 (ask for Concierge Lauren) and then pick up your fulfilled order that day at a time specified by YOU! So head out to Whole Foods Market in River Forest on Thursday November 1.

Thank you to Whole Foods for it’s generous support of the Irving Schoolyard Project! Hope to see you there searching for your teacher, buying lots of yummy healthy items, and supporting your community. Thank you!

Homework Club – Needs Volunteers

Hi Parents!

Our after school Homework Club is looking for some parent volunteers!  Homework Club is for 4th and 5th grade students who are recommended by their teachers for some extra tutoring and homework help.  We are at capacity but have more students who would benefit from this opportunity.  We are looking for 2-3 parents who can commit to volunteering every Monday and/or Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm from now through April.  Parents would work with a small group of 2-3 students on their homework.  In addition, we have a few younger siblings who come with their older siblings.  If you are able to make this commitment, please email Ms. Noonan at knoonan@op97.org.  Please specify whether you are available Mondays, Thursdays or both.  Email Ms. Noonan with any questions.  Thank you!

IRVING WORLD LANGUAGE PROGRAM 2012-2013 (registration from due before october 19th)

IRVING WORLD LANGUAGE PROGRAM 2012-2013 (registration from due before october 19th)

The World Language Program at Irving School introduces students to the basics of the target language and culture and develops the necessary skills for elementary comprehension. The relaxed class environment helps students learn to overcome any reticence in voicing target languages. Language skills will grow over years of instruction. The goal is to develop a comfort and familiarity with the language.

For 2012-2013, the World Language Program has expanded its offerings to 8 languages: Swahili, Portuguese, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Mandarin and Spanish. In order to accommodate the program to all students, some classes will run for 1 hour every week with all ages while other will betwice a week with the same age group.

The World Language Program is completely independent, funded solely by tuition paid by families of participating children. World Languages are sponsored by the PTO, endorsed by the School Board, and encouraged by the staff and principal of Irving School.

Congratulations on a fun Fun Run!

WOW! What a successful Fun Run we had on Tuesday! The kids had a great time in beautiful weather and we blew away our fundraising goal. Our goal was $9,200 for the school and we’ve raised $15,812.06! What a generous community we have!
The pledge period ends next Tuesday, October 23, so you have until then to bring in the pledge forms with checks or cash. Either send them with your child to give to their teacher, or put them in the locked PTO mailbox in the front office. The online system will be open through Tuesday as well. After payments are tallied we’ll know for sure who the top earning class and students are. Prizes will be announced later next week.
Please share our sincere thanks with your friends and family who made this such a huge success!
If you have any questions please email Jen Browning (browning2110@gmail.com) or Laura Crawford (lauracrawford47@gmail.com).

Irving phone directory

The Irving phone directory is almost complete.   A green sheet should have come home with your child this week (if more than 1 child, first alphabetically would have received it) and it contains the information that will be in the directory.  IF THERE ARE ANY CORRECTIONS, please return the green sheet immediately.  Also, if you have a 5th grader you have the opportunity to add a ‘tribute’ congratulating them at the end of the directory.  It’s $10 per entry which will go to the PTO to help cover printing expenses.  Please send tributes and questions to barbarametric@comcast.net
