New Families
When & What is Form & Fee Night?
Class lists!
Eagle Extras!
Pay your fees!
Ask questions!
Form & Fee Night is Thursday, August 16, from 4-6pm. If you have not already paid your school fees and lunch fees online then bring your checkbook to Irving at this time to do so. The forms went out in the summer mailing, but some are also available on the District 97 website.
More fun than that, though, is this is when class assignment lists are posted. Look outside the school’s front door to see which teacher your child has. Note that the lists will come down that night in order to make some changes. Class lists are not posted online for privacy reasons. (Please do not share photos of a class list on Facebook or other public online setting.)
The school is open on Form & Fee night, so new families can tour around on their own and the kids MIGHT be able to peek in their new classrooms.
Eagle Extras, Irving’s after-school program, is accepting registrations starting at Form & Fee night as well. Details can be found here.
Families do not have to stay for the whole time. Just drop by and say hello while you fill out forms, ask any questions of the front office staff, and hang out with parents you haven’t seen in a while.
See you soon!
Kindergarten Welcome: Saturday, August 18 1-3pm
Who is more anxious about starting kindergarten – you or your child? Would you like to meet some other parents and students before the first day of school?
If so, come to a playground get together for new Kindergarten families at Washington Irving School!!!
Saturday, August 18, 2012, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Irving School Playground, Cuyler and Harvard
(Rain Date: Sunday, August 19, same time)
The Parent Involvement Committee and PTO at Irving School are sponsoring this event for Kindergarten families to ease the transition into school and lessen “first day jitters.” It is a chance for the kids to meet other kids who will be starting kindergarten, for their parents to connect with other new families and also with some “veteran” parents. Come with your questions; we will try to answer them. Bring the kids, there will be refreshments.

May Update from the PTO
Staffing update
Mrs. Massarello is retiring after a long and wonderful career teaching First Grade at Irving. We hope you get a chance to wish her well before the end of the school year. We will miss her and we hope to see her around often. Current Title 1 teacher Ms. Pelling will be the new First Grade teacher. Here’s looking forward to her familiar face in a new setting!
PTO officers
The PTO voted to reelect all current PTO officers for the 2012-2013 school year. Since that meeting included changing the PTO By-Laws to make officer terms two years instead of one, the current board will stagger some positions at the end of next school year so that new officers can overlap with experienced ones. You can find contact info for everyone on the About page of the PTO website.
Wellness initiatives
With increasing awareness of the importance of preventing childhood obesity, all District 97 schools are making improvements in this area. The PTO recently voted to be more conscious of wellness in all activities, without limiting fundraisers. Examples of wellness efforts that are already underway include Smoothie Fridays, the Irving Pacers, and researching a Fun Run fundraiser for this Fall. Room parents can help by providing healthy food to class activities. Of course, improving our outside Schoolyard is a high priority to promoting wellness at Irving.
New by-laws
The PTO voted to make three main changes to the By-Laws. They include updating the mission statement, changing the board term limits to two years, and changing the requirement of an annual audit to a bi-annual financial review. Detailed changes can be found in the Documents section of the PTO website.
Extra (fun) PTO meeting
If you’ve read this far in this email, we encourage you to attend our last PTO meeting of the year. We’ve added another meeting on Thursday, May 31 at 6:30pm in the Library/Media Center to wrap things up after a busy month of May. The focus will be on reflecting on the past year’s activities in order to plan for next year over the summer.
