Reminder: TONIGHT – VILLAGE-SPONSORED FORUM ON FIREARMS — JANUARY 24TH AT VILLAGE HALL; 7 – 10 PM

From the Wednesday Journal, January 17, 2012:

The Oak Park Board of Health, a citizens advisory panel, is hosting a
forum on Jan. 24 to gather input from residents on guns. Oak Park’s
decades-long handgun ban was struck down by the Supreme Court in
mid-2010, and a gun store recently opened in the village, making the
timing right for a community conversation. “We want to hear from
citizens about their thoughts and ideas as to how firearms should be
regulated in the village of Oak Park,” said Margaret Provost-Fyfe.

A couple of years ago, the health board came up with a list of
possible actions that the community could take in the event that the
handgun was banned. And with the recent opening of Windy City Firearms
on Roosevelt Road, village trustees asked the health board to host the
forum to start the ball rolling toward possible action.

Participants will each have three minutes to speak. The health board
will then draft recommendations and forward them to the board for
future discussion at an undetermined date.

Following the June 2010 ruling, Oak Park tweaked its handgun ban,
allowing people to carry firearms in their place of business or home,
while still prohibiting assault weapons. Some ideas from the health
board’s 2010 report included starting a handgun registry, holding
safety courses and requiring owners to securely store their handguns.
Oak Park may also explore zoning regulations related to gun stores,
according to Simone Boutet, the acting village attorney.

The Giving Project Oak Park – Snow Shoveling

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!

Ohhh the weather outside is frightful….Well not yet!

But when it does snow you can bring delight to your neighbors, seniors, friends,

coaches, teachers and those unable to shovel themselves, by removing snow from

their walkways and drives!

All you have to do is grab a shovel and clear a path. We’re guessing that

whomever you hit will be extremely grateful!

If you participate in this frosty fun idea please cut off the tabs at the bottom half

of this page, slip it in the mailbox of the lucky household and let us know how you

felt about your experience by emailing us at thegivingprojectop@gmail.com.

Have fun and keep on giving,

The Giving Project

Oak Park Education Foundation Open House, Saturday, January 28th

The Oak Park Education Foundation is having an Open House on Saturday, January 28, in the Julian Commons, from 10 am – noon, to showcase our programs, and we’re looking for people to help. Please let me know if you’d like to help kids do hands-on projects, or if you know someone else who can help.

The event will overlap with our middle school Vex Robotics competition, which takes place in the Julian gym. The idea is to show off our programs and have parents get to know us while their kids are participating in fun projects. They’ll have a chance to:

  • Design & build with LEGOs
  • Create Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired window designs
  • Operate a Vex robot
  • Build a pocket totem sculpture
  • Experiment with EPA Scientists

During the morning they can also stop by the gym to see the Vex Robotics competition, or take a break at our “Competition Cafe.” The event is free and designed for kids ages 5-12.

We’ll have someone in charge of each project, but need some helping hands. If you’re available to help, please let me know!  Margaret Massarello <mmassarello@op97.org>
