Irving Garden 2012

We would love your help with the Irving Garden this year. Below are three volunteer opportunities:

  1. Help with the dirt dump! A LOT of fresh garden soil will be dumped on the parkway Friday May 18th.  We will need help transporting it in wheelbarrows to the garden plots on Saturday May 19th  9am-12 pm and Sunday May 20th 1-5pm.  Bring your wheelbarrows and shovels.
  2. Volunteer in your child’s class to be a garden parent. The teachers will need help planting in the last weeks of school.
  3. Volunteer to take a water/weeding week this summer. It’s a lot of fun, you get to keep the veggies that need to be harvested and we also hope to organize some community times for people to gather at the garden and have fun.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please email me at reshma.desai30@gmail.com . If you are interested in being a garden parent, please also contact your child’s teacher directly.

Thank you and we hope to see you there!

Irving Pacers are back

We are excited to announce that the Irving Pacers are back! The Irving Pacers is a recess activity for students who choose to walk or run around the block.  This is an optional activity for the Friday recesses in May and June.  Students will carry punch cards and get a punch every time they pass the front door.  Three laps around the block is equivalent to 1 mile. For every mile they walk/ run they will receive a foot token to put on a bracelet.  This is a free activity and all students in all grades are welcome to participate.

Weather permitting, we will be offering this activity on the following Fridays:  May 4, 11, 18, and 25 and on June 1. We will have adults stationed at several spots around the block to supervise and cheer students on. We will also have water cups available in front of the school at the punch station. Students are invited to bring their own water bottles.  This is a great activity to promote exercise and wellness.  We are looking for 8 volunteers for each week from 11 AM -12 PM.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Hannah O’Connor at hanwest74@hotmail.com. Please contact me or Mr. Hodge if you have questions. Thanks and we look forward to seeing your walkers.

Olympic Day

My name is Josh Hancock and I’m the PE teacher here at Irving. I also am the organizer for our Olympic Day.

For this great event to be possible, we need volunteers! And this is where you come in. Unfortunately we only have a handful of teachers who are free to help out due to other school day obligations, so we rely heavily on parent help for this event. This year it’s going to be on Friday May 25th. There is a morning session (grades K-2) that goes from 7:45-11:00 or an afternoon session (grades 3-5) that is from 11:45-3:00. You can choose to work one or both.  Please complete the form and send it to school.

Volunteers are placed at one of the 12 stations around the school. As classes come to your station, you just have to explain and facilitate the activity. The classroom teachers and assistants will also help you out. So come on out and help Irving have another great Olympic Day!  Plus, you’ll have the chance to get some fresh air and hopefully sun!

Please email me at jhancock@op97.org if you have any questions.  Thanks again in advance for all that you guys do for this school. Without you Olympic Day wouldn’t be possible!
