World Language Program registration deadline is October 29th, 2013

(not october 19th as typed on the previous registration form)
The World Language Program at Irving School is an introduction to different languages and cultures.  In these classes, students will learn basic communication vocabulary. The relaxed class environment will help students overcome their apprehension to speak a foreign language. Language skills will grow over years of instruction.
For 2013-2014, the World Language Program offers 8 languages: Swahili, Polish, Greek, French, German, Italian, Mandarin and Spanish. Some classes will run for 1 hour every week while other will be 1/2 hourtwice a week (see on the back of the form). Due to the new lunchtime schedule, we are not able to offer every language to every grade. If you cannot register your child in the language you want please write a comment at the end of this form.
The World Language Program is completely independent, funded solely by tuition paid by families of participating children. World Languages are sponsored by the PTO, endorsed by the School Board, and encouraged by the staff and principal of Irving School.

Irving Book Fair Update

We just wanted to thank everyone on behalf of the Irving Book Fair!  Your purchases have earned us over $4000 dollars so far this sale for our school library.  Over 74 books were purchased from our teachers’ wish lists to help expand their classroom libraries.
The physical book sale is over, but our online Irving Book Fair continues until October 30th, with a much larger catalog of books to choose from!  All books will be shipped free of charge to the school when the sale is done, and we will deliver them to the classrooms.  It’s a great way to get some holiday shopping done or find a book that you didn’t see at the sale.  Profits from the online sale get added to our physical sale’s total, allowing us to earn some growth bonuses and earn more money for our library!
You can access our online book fair at:
Thank you so much for helping support our school library and build your child’s literacy skills!

Irving Book Fair – Monday, October 7th through Friday, October 11th

Hours:  M-Th from dismissal until 6:30 p.m., Friday from dismissal until 11:45 a.m.

It’s a Reading Oasis! An amazing selection of books is headed our way! We will be accepting pre-orders for Diary of a Wimpy Kid 8, which will be released on November 3rd (students will receive forms and book fair flyers the week before the sale). On Tuesday, October 8th we will be receiving the latest in the Percy Jackson series, The House of Hades.  Teacher wish lists will be available at the sale to help build classroom libraries.

On Thursday, October 10th at 1:00, our very own Queen of the Nile, Ms. Noonan will grace our fair with a special book reading for students. Enter a land of pyramids, deserts, and palm trees. All participants will be entered in a raffle to win a free poster from Scholastic.

If you can’t make it to our fair, the online book fair runs from October 10-October 30. It’s a great way to get your holiday shopping done early or find a special gift for a special teacher! http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/washingtonirvingelemschool1

We need volunteers to help work the fair during classroom preview hours and the sale.  We’d love to have you, even if you only have 45 minutes to spare at dismissal!

Thanks!

D.E.A.R. Program – Born to Read at Irving!!!

In September the whole school will participate in an uninterrupted D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) for eight minutes. Each month the number of minutes will increase by eight. Our goal is to increase our amount of sustained reading so that by the month of May each student can read uninterrupted for 64 minutes. Be on the lookout for monthly reading exercises!
