Free Garden Class Available

The Park District has generously offered free classes to PTO members involved with their school gardens. If you have an interest in working with the Irving garden, either this year or in the future, but you’d feel more comfortable by taking  one of these classes to better prepare, please email Laura Crawford, lauracrawford47@gmail.com, to sign up.

Note that you don’t have to be an expert gardener to help out in the Irving garden; anyone is welcome!

The free Park District classes are:

1.      Vegetable Gardening on Saturday, March 2, 9 and 16 from 9 am to 11 am. This will cover all the basics from soil preparation and vegetable selection to vegetable harvesting.

2.      Start Your Own Seeds on Saturday, March 23 from 9 am to 11 am.  How to purchase seed, when and how to germinate it and how to grow seedlings on to garden-ready plants.

Message from Dr. Roberts regarding the tragedy in Connecticut

We are all shocked and saddened by the tragedy that occurred today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, the citizens of Newton and the countless others whose lives have been touched by this horrible event.
A disturbing incident such as this serves as a painful reminder of how important it is for all us to be prepared should an act of violence or disaster strike our schools or community. Our families can rest assured that we take the safety of our students and staff very seriously. That is why we have a number of plans and procedures for dealing with a variety of dangerous situations, including a lock down drill that we implement in response to the presence of an intruder in our buildings. We practice/review these plans and procedures with our students and staff on a regular basis to ensure that everyone knows how to respond in an emergency (e.g., what announcement to listen for, where to go inside the building, the names and addresses of off-site evacuation locations).
We also have protocols and resources in place that we use to provide parents/guardians with critical updates and information they need in a situation like this. They include the emergency notification system that we utilized last week to let families know about the attempted child abductions. If you did not receive those messages, we encourage you to please make sure your child’s school has your most up-to-date contact information (phone number and e-mail address).
In addition to these plans, procedures and protocols, we have preventive measures such as secured entrances that help us monitor who is coming in and out of our schools. We are in the process of installing swipe card access systems at every building (will be completed after winter break), and are investigating the installation of security cameras at our elementary schools (already installed at the middle schools). We also continue to work closely and collaboratively with the Oak Park Police Department to ensure that the necessary precautions are being taken to protect our students and staff on a daily basis.
At the request of a number of parents/guardians, we instructed our staff members not to discuss today’s incident with our students. We understand and appreciate that many of you would prefer to have the initial conversation about this sensitive subject with your children. With that said, our social workers and psychologists will be available starting on Monday morning should any of our students, staff members or parents/guardians need to talk about what happened today. We have also been informed by the police department that officers will be increasing patrols around our buildings throughout the school day starting this afternoon.
We realize this terrible incident has caused a great deal of apprehension among the members of our community. While we have mechanisms in place to keep our children safe and secure, your vigilance, partnership and perspectives on this critical issue are always welcome and greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time, your attention and your support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Al Roberts
Superintendent

Irving is getting a new playground!

Now let’s have some fun!

We need your help to determine exactly what kind of play equipment our new schoolyard will have installed next summer!

What: Come to the meeting to decide what playground equipment our kids will enjoy for years to come. We may also identify minor items for the Schoolyard that the PTO would pay for (additional seating, landscaping, etc.).

Who: Any current Irving parent, guardian, teacher or staff member may attend and give input. This means any current member of the PTO.

When: Thursday, December 6, 6:30-8:30pm.

A follow-up meeting will be on Monday, December 10, 6:30-8:30pm, to review the final plans.

Where: Irving School Auditorium. Free childcare is provided in the Community Room.

Click here to see examples of playground equipment. We encourage you to visit the schools who already have new playgrounds (Beye, Holmes, Longfellow, Lincoln), or to talk to friends at those schools for their feedback. We are looking to purchase equipment similar to what is going in at other Oak Park elementary schools.

The landscape architects will be on hand to guide us through the process of choosing equipment within our budget.

Things to consider when determining playground equipment:

Activity: The play equipment provides physical activity and exercise.
Gathering spaces: Where can children go, alone or in groups, when they’re not active?
Creativity: Equipment and spaces can provide inspiration for young imaginations.
Density: Irving has a very dense playspace for children to play.
Shade: The building offers some shade. Equipment can also offer shade.
Supervision: Some play equipment requires more supervision than others.
Accessibility: Ensure play items are accessible for students with differing abilities.
Seating: For adults and children.
Safety: Safety is a high priority.

We look forward to hearing from you on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6 AT 6:30PM!

Questions? Please contact Margaret Jeschke (margaret_jeschke@yahoo.com) or Laura Crawford (lauracrawford47@gmail.com).

Please note: this meeting will take the place of the regularly scheduled December PTO meeting. The next PTO meeting is January 10.

Schoolyard Update: One Giant Leap for Irving!

At a recent meeting, the Board of Education voted to move ahead with the next, major step toward construction of a new Irving Schoolyard! This means Irving is well on its way to getting a new playground, a large artificial turf field and re-surfaced parking! In March the board will vote on the final plans so that construction can happen in summer of 2013. In the meantime, construction documents are being created and will go out to bid.

Click here to read the recent article in the Wednesday Journal about Irving’s Schoolyard.

What will our new schoolyard look like?

The Board of Ed is sending three different plans out for construction bids. They will pick one in February. Between now and February the Board will conduct additional reviews on issues like traffic patterns, pedestrian safety, parking, etc. During that time they will also be able to work with potential partners, like the Park District, who may assist with funding.

This is the basic plan, Option 1.

This is Option 2. It’s the same as Option 1 but with a smaller field.

This is Option 3. The layout is similar to the original Master Plan.

How do these plans compare to the original Master Plan?

One of the plans (Option 3) has a similar layout of the field, playground and parking. The other two plans leave the playground and parking where they are now but with significant improvements, and they put a field where the current asphalt is.

The original Master Plan.

One major difference is that many of the underground environmental features of the original plan are not able to be included during initial construction due to the increased cost of storm water management, permeable pavers, rain gardens and certain landscaping.

Unfortunately, the grant opportunities that could cover these costs are not on the same timeline that our construction requires. We look forward to finding other grants for environmental features that can go on top of a new schoolyard at a later time.

Are we almost done?

It is important to note that the original Master Plan is a guiding, visionary document. Many of the features on the original plan are items that can be added on as future fundraising allows. Consider the progress of a revised plan this spring as the fundamental building block for our vision.

One of the guiding principles of the Irving Schoolyard Project is to offer innovative learning experiences in an outdoor environment. The solar panels are one example of this effort. The school garden is another. Efforts like these will continue since Irving is full of people dedicated to improvement.

In fact, the Schoolyard Project recently received a grant from the Oak Park River Forest Community Foundation to expand the garden and to build a straw bale tool shed. The south side of the building will become quite a lush educational learning environment for students! This is all part of the Irving Schoolyard Project’s overall vision.

Thank you.

We need your input to determine the specific playground equipment that our students will play on for years to come, and details on that can be found separately. Otherwise, look for updates when there is significant activity from the Board of Education starting later in January, 2013.

Again and again, thank you.
