Letter from Mr. Hodge about Birthday Celebrations

August, 2012

Dear Irving Families,

Thank you for helping us get off to another great start! As we begin the school year, I know we all have high hopes and aspirations for what we will accomplish over the 2012-2013 school year. One of the goals we are striving to achieve as a school, a district, and a community is to improve the physical health and wellness of our children. With this in mind, and based on the district’s Wellness Policy and the feedback I have received from parents/guardians and staff, we will be excluding food from all future birthday celebrations at Irving School.

Just as we have in the past, these important milestone moments for our students will be commemorated with a school wide announcement, birthday sticker, and a birthday book signed by me.

In the classroom, gifts of small, inexpensive birthday favors such as stickers, pencils and cards will be permitted. We ask that arrangements for the delivery and distribution of these items be made in advance with your child’s teacher. You can also donate a book to the class or school library in honor of your child’s birthday that can be read on or near his/her birthday.

While food will no longer be part of our birthday festivities, it will still be served at other school celebrations such as Halloween, Winter Holiday  and Valentines Day. In those cases, we will continue to encourage menu choices that reflect what we are teaching our students about nutrition and wellness.

Please call or email me if you have any questions about the changes to our birthday guidelines. Thank you for your contributions to the health and wellness of all of our students and for your ongoing support of Irving School.

Sincerely,

John Hodge, Principal, Irving School

Dear District 97 Families,
Hope you have all had a fun, relaxing summer. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Chris Jasculca and I am the director of policy, planning and communications for the district. During the course of the year, I will send out update e-mails that feature school, district and community news, event details or announcements. I will also work Stephanie Grammens, the district’s Web master, to post many of these same items on the district’s family of Web sites. In the meantime, I have compiled information I thought you might find helpful as we start the 2012-2013 school year. You can click here or use the links below to access this information.
Please call or e-mail me (708-524-3006; cjasculca@op97.org) if you have any questions or need more information.
Take care.

Box Tops For Education

Time to turn in those baggies! Use the baggie sent home with your child in June (we recycled the bags this year!) or any baggie from home. Every child who turns in a bag by August 31st will receive a prize and all Box tops collected over the summer will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win movie passes! The drawing will be held at 8am on Friday August 31st. Keep collecting as we will return to our regular monthly drawing for certificates to the school spirit store starting in September. New families: Keep a look out in the digital backpack and Tuesday packet for a full explanation of the Box Tops For Education program! Reminder: Your child’s name and teacher’s name need to written on the back of each coupon in order to be entered into the drawing. We, unfortunately, can not accept expired Box Tops or Labels For Education. Thank-you for your support of BTFE and Irving! Questions: e-mail Michele at grecodrama@sbcglobal.net
