2nd Annual Irving Art Fest & 6th Annual Irving Poetry Slam

The 2nd Annual Irving Art Fest, in conjunction with the 6th Annual Irving Poetry Slam, is coming up!  Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 16th 6:00-8:00pm.

Join us for a night of music, self expression, laughter, and creativity. This is an opportunity for all Irving students to share their creativity, talents, and skill. Those who attend will get the opportunity to play a Spanish game, watch a 5th grade play, look at art, meet a traveling poet and watch or participate in the poetry slam. There will also be a special performance by the Irving chorus. We can’t wait to see you there!

Each student in the building will have a piece of artwork on display in the hallway.  Don’t miss this great end of the year event!

If your child would like to participate in the Poetry Slam, please return the attached permission slip to Mr. Williams.

Olympic Day! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

For this great event to be possible, we need volunteers! And this is where you come in. Unfortunately we only have a handful of teachers who are free to help out due to other school day obligations, so we rely heavily on parent help for this event. This year it’s going to be on Friday May 24th. There is a morning session (grades K-2) that goes from 7:45-11:00 or an afternoon session (grades 3-5) that is from 11:45-3:00. You can choose to work one or both.

Volunteers are placed at one of the 12 stations around the school. As classes come to your station, you just have to explain and facilitate the activity. The classroom teachers and assistants will also help you out. So come on out and help Irving have another great Olympic Day!  Plus, you’ll have the chance to get some fresh air and hopefully sun!

Please email me at jhancock@op97.org if you have any questions.  Thanks again in advance for all that you guys do for this school. Without you Olympic Day wouldn’t be possible!

Last day of school

Due to the emergency day we used last week in conjunction with the severe weather that descended upon the area, the last day of school for the 2012-2013 school year will now be Friday, May 31. This will be a full day of school for all members of our staff, as well as students in pre-kindergarten through seventh grade. By extending the school year by a day, we will ensure that we meet the state law requiring 176 days of pupil attendance.

Graduation for the middle schools will still be held on Wednesday, May 29 at Oak Park and River Forest High School. The ceremony for Brooks will take place at 5 p.m. and the ceremony for Julian will take place at 7:30 p.m. Eighth grade students will not be required to attend school on May 30 or 31.
