Take 5 With Your PTO! Irving DivInc

Take 5 Minutes With Your PTO! Each week we’ll peel back an area of our PTO and Volunteer Committees to learn more about how you can get involved.

This week we are featuring: The Irving Diversity And Inclusion Committee

Who they are: Lettie Sullivan and Mechelle Wesley, co-chairs and a whole slew of helpers!

What they do: Coordinate events and programs that promote a diverse and inclusive educational environment for all Irving students. Meetings typically 2nd Tuesdays at 7pm – at Irving. These committee chairs also sit on the Executive Board of the PTO (which meets first Thursdays 6:30 for Executive meeting, and 7pm for Public meeting).

So what’s the commitment?
There are 3 ways to serve on this committee, please contemplate the level of commitment that works best for you:

  • Planner: This role requires the commitment to meet, plan and participate in any given event(s). Please expect to dedicate at least 3hrs+ per month spaced out for various meetings, conference calls and emails. You will be collaborating on a subcommittee until your event completes.
  • Player/Participant: This role requires you to sign up to participate in DivInc functions. Please expect to pitch in with setup/breakdown and logistical activities, but most of all come and have FUN! Ideally, we all will serve in this way. Time requirement is dependent on the event.
  • Promoter/Participant: This role requires you to champion, promote, recruit and spread the word about DivInc activities to the Irving community and your neighbors. Come and play with us, bring yourself, family, friends and neighbors to our events to ensure their success. You can do this on your own timetable. Staying informed and attending monthly meetings is good enough.

What are some things they have done?
Well take a look at these great events made possible by this team just this year!

Book Club/ Table Talk: The 5 Love Languages of Children
Gender & Inclusion Training for Parents & Caregivers
A Taste of Irving! Community Potluck Dinner

And not to mention – tonight’s Irving Valentine’s Day Loved Ones Dance. And the last week of the month – our African American History Week!

So – hope to see you tonight – and next month at the monthly meeting on the 11th!

Irving Celebrates Black History Month!!!

Hello Irving Families,

In celebration of Black History Month this year, Irving proudly presents African Heritage Week  February 24th – 28th (see attached flyer for details). This will be an exciting, week-long schedule of activities designed to engage students and to highlight the history, achievements, and contributions of African Americans to our society. Please be sure to mark your calendars!
Additionally, to help culminate our Black History Month and African Heritage Week celebrations, all of our students will be working on a collage project entitled, “Black is Beautiful”, on
Friday, February 28th. The finished works will then be displayed throughout the school.
These collages will be created using images taken from predominantly African American publications, such as Essence Magazine, Ebony Magazine, Jet Magazine, etc. If you have any magazines that you could donate to use for these collages, please send them in with your child to school. Also, feel free to search media outlets for positive images of African Americans and print in full color. The more images to pull from, the more beautiful these projects will be!
Thank you so much for your help and support!

Uniquely You, Tea Party Sunday 2/23 2:30-5:30pm

Event: Uniquely You Tea Party
The “Uniquely You Tea Party” is a culturally responsive gathering for girls that identify as Black, ages 8 -11 and are enrolled in the Oak Park, District 97 Elementary Schools.  This event offers a safe space for Black girls to tell their stories, engage with other Black girls, while learning to cooperate in group settings. The girls will learn conflict resolution skills and positive ways to build lasting friendships. In this space our goal is that each girl will be affirmed and leave feeling celebrated and empowered!
Note: We are also looking for black women to help facilitate a discussion with a group of girls at a tea table.  To inquire or sign-up, please email Juantagriffin@yahoo.com
