District 97 – Agreement reached in TIF litigation

During a joint board meeting held at Percy Julian Middle School on December 13, 2011, District 97, District 200 and the Village of Oak Park approved a settlement agreement that resolved the TIF litigation related to the 2003 intergovernmental agreement. Brooks Honored for Efforts to Fight Hunger
Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School recently earned the status of National School of Distinction from the Schools Fight Hunger program. The honor, which was awarded to fewer than 2,000 schools nationwide for the 2010-11 school year, is given to schools that demonstrate notable enthusiasm, creativity or dedication in getting involved with the effort to fight hunger.

  • Forum to address concerns over new gun shop – A community forum to address concerns over the gun shop set to open at 6338 Roosevelt Road is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. at Irving Elementary School (1125 S. Cuyler Ave.). The owner of the newly licensed gun shop will be on hand, along with representatives of the Village Board and Police Department.   • Village Board to discuss proposed FLW Historic District expansion – The Village Board will review a proposal to expand of the boundaries of the local Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture historic district during a meeting scheduled on Monday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall (123 Madison St.). The boundaries of the National Register historic district were expanded in 2009, and the proposal is to match the local boundaries to the national ones. The Historic Preservation Commission hosted a series of public meetings to discuss the proposal with property owners within the proposed new boundaries before forwarding a recommendation for approval to the Village Board.   • Recycle holiday lights – The Village has partnered with Vintage Tech Recyclers to host a holiday light drop-off box at the Public Works Center (201 South Blvd.), during December and January. Mini-lights, C7 lights, C9 lights, rope and LED lights, as well as extension cords, are acceptable. Items may be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. District 97 will be hosting another series of community chats with Superintendent Al Roberts this fall. These events will provide the staff, parents/guardians and neighbors from each school’s community with the opportunity to participate in an open, informal dialogue with the superintendent about a variety of issues that impact their individual building or the district as a whole.

The chat for Irving School will be held in the school’s media center/library on Thursday, December 1 at 6:30 p.m. (1125 S. Cuyler). The talk is expected to last 90 minutes, followed by the regular monthly PTO meeting. Free child care will be provided.

Principal Carter Earns Administrator Award

Principal Sheila Carter from Hatch School has earned the Administrator Award from the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. You can read more about this accomplishment by clicking here.

 

District 97 Teachers Nominated for Golden Apple Award

Three District 97 teachers have been nominated for a 2012 Golden Apple Award, including:

  • Cristina Arroyo, a kindergarten teacher at Irving School
  • Marvin Childress, a first grade multiage teacher at Lincoln School
  • Elizabeth Chase Vivas, a kindergarten teacher at Lincoln School

Middle School Jazz Ensembles Performing at Fitzgerald’s

Information from the Village of Oak Park

Free dental sealants are available to Oak Park children whose families meet guidelines for participating in the free or reduced school meal program and who do not have health insurance. The program is funded by a grant through the Illinois All Kids healthcare program. Sealants usually are applied at ages six and 12 years when the first and second molars appear. Nationwide Test by FEMA

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be conducting a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System on Wednesday, November 9 at 1 p.m. (CST).
