Brooks Honored for Efforts to Fight Hunger
Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School recently earned the status of National School of Distinction from the Schools Fight Hunger program. The honor, which was awarded to fewer than 2,000 schools nationwide for the 2010-11 school year, is given to schools that demonstrate notable enthusiasm, creativity or dedication in getting involved with the effort to fight hunger.

  • Forum to address concerns over new gun shop – A community forum to address concerns over the gun shop set to open at 6338 Roosevelt Road is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. at Irving Elementary School (1125 S. Cuyler Ave.). The owner of the newly licensed gun shop will be on hand, along with representatives of the Village Board and Police Department.   • Village Board to discuss proposed FLW Historic District expansion – The Village Board will review a proposal to expand of the boundaries of the local Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture historic district during a meeting scheduled on Monday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall (123 Madison St.). The boundaries of the National Register historic district were expanded in 2009, and the proposal is to match the local boundaries to the national ones. The Historic Preservation Commission hosted a series of public meetings to discuss the proposal with property owners within the proposed new boundaries before forwarding a recommendation for approval to the Village Board.   • Recycle holiday lights – The Village has partnered with Vintage Tech Recyclers to host a holiday light drop-off box at the Public Works Center (201 South Blvd.), during December and January. Mini-lights, C7 lights, C9 lights, rope and LED lights, as well as extension cords, are acceptable. Items may be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
